How to Become a Candidate

School board members are elected to three-year terms. You may file a declaration of candidacy for the school board opening you wish to fill if you are a school district elector of your school district and a resident of the trustee zone in which there is an opening or an election being held.  The declaration shall be filed with the clerk of the board of trustees of the school district not later than 5:00 p.m. on the fifth Friday proceeding the day of election of trustees.  The election of school district trustees shall be on the third Tuesday in May. If a district employee is elected to his or her district’s board, the employee must quit his/her job to sit on the board.

Board members are elected by zones, or in some rare instances, at-large. Zones are determined at the district level so that each zone shall have approximately the same population. Board members elected at-large may live anywhere in the district.

Your school district clerk, superintendent or a school board member can tell you how board members are elected in your district.
