ISBA Annual Convention Recap 2022

On November 9-11, 2022, the Idaho School Boards Association celebrated its 80th Anniversary as it hosted its Annual Convention in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. School board members and school leaders from across the state joined the ISBA team for a jam-packed week of learning, networking, and growing as school board leaders.

Some of our favorite highlights from the event are included below.

Workshop Sessions:

The Annual Convention kicked off with early bird workshops from Amy White and Lisa Colón Durham, Ryan Cantrell, Kelly Moulton, and Katie Ebner. Then, throughout the Convention, attendees had their choice of attending 90 educational workshops spanning over two days.

The most popular being Legal Hot Topics with Amy White, Open Meeting Law and Beyond with Amy White, and Involving your Community in Governance by Phil Gore.

General Sessions:

This year’s general session presentations included Phil Gore’s Thursday morning presentation about Reaching the Summit of Student Success as well as a presentation Idaho’s new Superintendent of Public Instruction, Debbie Critchfield, on Thursday.

Exhibit Show:

A SOLD OUT exhibit show included 39 exhibitors from across the country. They offered ISBA members a peak at their innovative services and products targeted specifically with schools in mind. Exhibit show attendees who visited at least 20 booths were included in a drawing for two $100 Amazon Gift Cards.

Business Session:

It is heartwarming to work alongside so many individuals who have Idaho students’ best interests in mind. During the Business Session this year, the membership passed all of ISBA’s 14 resolutions and the single bylaw change up for consideration. ISBA is ready to advocate on behalf of our members throughout the 2023 Legislative Session.

We also welcomed into the fold our new Executive Officers. Nancy Gregory is your 2023 President, Starr Olsen is your President-Elect, Brian Pyper is your Vice President, and Jason Knopp is your Immediate Past President.

The Scholarship Auction:

It was another successful year for the Scholarship Auction and the ISBA Scholarship Trust! 95 items were donated by members across the state. Thanks to everyone who joined us and participated, our sponsor: Southwest Foodservices, and a donation from Simplot, the Scholarship Trust was able to raise over $11,000!

The auction was also moved from Thursday to Wednesday this year to allow for a shorter Thursday evening. We plan to continue this moving forward, and hope you will be able to join us again in 2023.

Awards Banquet:

This year, ISBA had the pleasure of presenting eight ISBA members and one influential community member with awards during our Award Ceremony on Thursday evening. Angie Robertson (Jefferson School District) won Board Chair of the Year, Niki Scheppers (West Ada School District) won Board Clerk of the Year, and Karen Pyron (Butte County School District) won the Bulldog Award. Several board members — Kevin Howell (Madison School District), Anne Ritter (Meridian Medical Arts Charter), Louis Pifher (Meridian Medical Arts Charter), and Nancy Gregory (Boise School District) — were recognized for each having served as a board member for 20 years.

New this year, the Friends of Education award was presented to two people who have actively made a difference in the lives of Idaho students – Senator Carl Crabtree and Dr. Cheryl Charlton.

2023 Awards Nominations will be available soon. If you know someone on your board who is making a difference in your community, we encourage you to nominate them.

New This Year:

ISBA was excited to offer two new opportunities to our members. Networking sessions allowed for members to meet peers from across the state to discuss hot topic issues affecting their schools. Based on the wonderful feedback we received, we hope to continue to offer networking opportunities at upcoming ISBA events.

The Clerk’s Corner, previously titled Friday Finale, offered valuable time for school board clerks to network and learn from one another while the Business Session was happening. We received great feedback about this event and look forward to continuing Clerk’s Corner again next year.

Sponsors:

We are thankful for our 2022 Annual Convention sponsors. ISBA could not put together this event without their help. Thank you, sponsors, for playing such a major role in making our Annual Convention so successful.

Thank you to all our members who attended the 2022 Annual Convention. We hope you found value and were able to bring home many new ideas. We are happy to serve you here at ISBA.

We can’t wait to see you in Boise for our 2023 Annual Convention!
