EMPOWER LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS

School boards make a difference. Research conclusively demonstrates that school boards matter when it comes to student achievement. They don’t cause student achievement to improve, but their actions can either hinder or support improved student achievement. Gain the knowledge and skills at this year’s Leadership Institute to help elevate your board and district/charter to the next level for improved student success.

LEARNER OUTCOMES

  1. Discover how board perspectives, knowledge, and actions can affect student achievement.
  2. Practice developing clear, specific, and measurable goals for student achievement.
  3. Explore ways to monitor progress on student achievement throughout the year.
  4. Consider how to engage your community in strategic support of student success.

AGENDA

School boards in systems that are improving in student achievement govern differently than boards in stagnate or declining school systems. Discover the differences.

II. SMART GOALS

Follow a process for developing Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals for student achievement.

III. MONITORING PROGRESS

What data does your board need to see to exercise responsible governance for improved student outcomes? That depends upon your goals and the data available to you. Practice discussing interim student achievement data to provide accountability and support improvement.

IV. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Community involvement at the governance level may be one the most valuable and under-utilized opportunities in leading for improved student learning. Discover ways your board could build partnerships and engagement to support improved student success.
